Cyclone Jawad: Extremely heavy rainfall likely in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha will have maximum impact of cyclone Jawad irrespective of its place of landfall, India Meteorological Department (IMD) director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said even as weathermen still wait for more clarity on probable path of the impending storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal.
“The cyclone may or may not make its landfall along Odisha coast. However, since it will come very close to the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast on Saturday morning, it will trigger extremely heavy rainfall in some parts of coastal Odisha and wind up to 70 to 80 km per hour on Saturday,” Mohapatra said.
There are chances that the cyclone will recurve north, north-east on Saturday morning. If it doesn’t hit Odisha coast and move towards West Bengal or Bangladesh, its strength may weaken by the time it hits the landmass. In any case Odisha will bear the maximum brunt since it will come very close to its coast, he said.
According to German weather service ICON model, the storm may make landfall near Puri while American GFS model predicts landfall in West Bengal-Bangladesh.
